Coordinator of Volunteer Initiatives

POSITION REPORTS TO: Chief Development Officer
My Sisters’ Place (MSP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Westchester County, New York, has grown from a grassroots task force and drop-in center, formalized in 1978, to a cutting-edge leader and resource in the fields of domestic violence and human trafficking. MSP strives to end domestic violence and human trafficking through comprehensive services, advocacy, and community education and works to create a world in which every individual has the basic human right to be free from gender-based violence and to engage in relationships that embrace the principles of respect, equality, and safety.
The Coordinator of Volunteer Initiatives (CVI) will oversee MSP’s volunteer client accompaniment program and individual, corporate, and community group volunteer engagement activities. In addition, the Coordinator will enhance and manage MSP’s student internship program. The CVI provides an important link between MSP programs and the community at large.
Sister-in-Law (SIL) Accompaniment Program
Develop and expand MSP’s specially trained corps of volunteers who provide MSP clients with supportive accompaniment to appointments at family and immigration court, as well as in interactions with government agencies, interviews or in other contexts where clients may need encouragement. The CVI will:
- Recruit, interview, screen and train new volunteers
- Develop and update training materials
- Convene volunteers on a monthly basis for ongoing training and peer-to-peer support
- Partner with MSP attorneys and counselors to schedule SIL accompaniments
- Monitor program outcomes using Apricot database and meet funders’ grant reporting requirements
Individual, Corporate, Community Groups Volunteer Programs
The CVI will work with the Development Team to develop and strengthen community engagement opportunities. Activities include:
- Give presentations on MSP’s mission, issues, and services to corporate, community, and other groups
- Interview, train, and schedule new and experienced volunteers for various opportunities including in-kind management, administrative tasks, and agency events
- Engage corporate and community groups to create meaningful volunteer opportunities that support program needs and the agency as a whole
- Cultivate, maintain, and deepen individual, corporate, community, and local non-profit relationships
- Collaborate with Development team on outreach and resource development
- Maintain and update list of active and lapsed volunteers, corporations, and community groups
Intern Programs
- Recruit, train, and supervise student interns
- Liaise with other departments to identify projects
- Maintain on-going contact and engage in “alumni events”
- Develop and expand intern program
Other
- Support our philosophy and guiding principles
- Develop and maintain strong and supportive partnerships with neighboring agencies
- Co-coordinate in-kind program/donations, participating in conversations on how client needs and agency goals intersect strategically
- Plan and facilitate volunteer appreciation events
- Assist with agency/staff/client events
- Participate in agency wide committee work as needed
- Assist with all aspects of major Development activities/events
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience working in a nonprofit or other setting with community groups. In addition, candidate must:
- Have a car and insurance
- Be available on occasional weekends and evenings
- Able to lift/transport heavy packages
- Work well cross-departments/diverse communities
- Spanish proficiency a plus
