Community Educator
JOB HIGHLIGHTS: As part of a dynamic, diverse team of passionate educators, committed to transforming the world, you will be a part of a dedicated team responsible for Community Education and Prevention programming and activities.
MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS: Youth education and prevention, positive youth development, community outreach and relationship-building, curriculum development, workshop facilitation, program management.
LOCATION: This opportunity is primarily based in Yonkers, NY – currently performed remotely, with in-person work on an as-needed basis. The role involves travel throughout Westchester County to meet the needs of our community partners including (but not limited to) middle and high schools, community-based organizations and other youth-serving agencies.
JOB OVERVIEW: As a Community Educator, you will work to further MSP’s mission in accordance with our guiding principles in a key role as part of the Community Education and Prevention team. The Community Educator is expected to provide programming in a way that is compassionate and adheres to culturally appropriate best practices and agency expectations.
YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR: Under the guidance of the Manager of Youth Education and Prevention, the Community Educator will:
- Facilitate short- and long-term teen dating violence prevention workshops in Westchester County schools, community groups and youth treatment facilities.
- Develop DVEP’s short-term Healthy Relationships workshops and long-term Relationships, Empowerment, And Leadership (REAL) programs, including curricula development, school outreach, and publications as needed.
- Plan, implement and facilitate the week-long Summer Institute retreat for high school youth.
- Launch The Leadership Circle (TLC) so that it becomes an ongoing youth cohort dedicated to building youth leadership and advocacy skills on healthy relationships and anti-oppression.
- Facilitate trainings for youth-serving professionals and parents on dating violence.
- Develop and facilitate DVEP’s teen leadership and volunteering opportunities.
- Manage the scheduling system for workshops and provide outreach and customer service to partnering schools and agencies.
- Enter workshop evaluation data in database and run reports as needed.
- Evaluate outcomes and write monthly, quarterly and annual grant reports.
- Cross-train on job functions related to all DVEP services.
- Provide short-term support, referrals and advocacy on behalf of dating violence survivors.
- Act as a liaison between DVEP and external partners.
- Collaborate with staff across MSP departments.
- Projects and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
YOU MUST HAVE:
- Bachelor of Arts in social work, sociology, gender/women’s studies or education preferred.
- Access to a reliable automobile, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to travel extensively throughout Westchester County required.
- Imagination, creativity, flexibility and a sense of humor.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Prior experience with adolescents, teen dating violence, positive youth development strategies and/or anti-oppression practices desired.
- Strong public speaker, especially in educational and large-group settings.
- Ability to work well in a team setting.
- Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, computer knowledge preferred.
- Must be willing to work frequent early mornings, and some weekend and evening hours.

- While performing the duties of the job, the employee must possess the ability to communicate with staff and clients, and to occasionally lift files and/or move up to 10 pounds.
YOU’LL BE SUCCESSFUL IF:
As a passionate advocate for social justice, you adopt an anti-oppression lens to understand gender-based violence. You recognize that clients come to MSP while navigating different structural and social injustices that affect their experiences of survivorship. You also understand that this work requires and ongoing commitment to developing the language and tools we need to undo institutional oppression.
TEAM OVERVIEW: MSP’s Community Education and Prevention team consists of a Community Educator, Manager of Youth Education and Prevention, Director of Social Transformation, Coordinator of Giant Steps Through Athletics, Project Coordinator of Linking Communities Collaboration for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and Senior Director of Community Collaborations.
